Key Takeaways

  • Meibomian gland probing is designed to encourage the clearing of physical blockages from your eyelid oil glands.
  • The procedure takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes, though everyone is different.
  • Numbing drops can help keep you comfortable.
  • It can provide some relief from dry eye symptoms.
  • An eye doctor can help you decide if MGP is right for you.

If you have dry eye, you’ve probably tried a variety of treatments to feel some relief. From eye drops to screen breaks to a humidifier in your room, if nothing seems to work, it might be time for professional options. Our team at Higgins Brothers’ Vision Care knows that one of the most common causes of dry eye is tiny blockages along your eyelid margins where natural oils should flow freely.

When those delicate pathways clog up, you need a targeted solution to find relief. Meibomian gland probing (MGP) is an in-office procedure in which the eye doctor uses a small tool to unblock the oil glands in your eyelids.

The Basics of MGP

How the Treatment Works

Scar tissue can build up along your eyelid margins over time, which can limit or completely stop the flow of oil from your meibomian glands. These glands produce the oily layer of your tears, which helps them evaporate more slowly. Without this oil, you’ll likely begin to experience dry eye symptoms.

During MGP, the eye doctor gently releases this tension, which may help improve oil flow from the glands. Improved gland function may help reduce dry eye symptoms for some patients.

Alternative Dry Eye Therapies

Every case of dry eye is different, so our team tailors our care to your needs. Depending on your case, MGP may need to be combined with other options. This could include recommendations such as:

  • Warm compress routines at home to help support gland function following treatment.
  • Nutritional support, which may help support tear quality in some individuals.
  • Specialized eye drops that may offer more hydration than over-the-counter options.

Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eye

Everyone experiences dry eye differently, but there are some common symptoms to look for. If you notice any of these signs, it might be time to schedule a visit with your eye doctor:

  • Burning or stinging sensations.
  • Redness or excessively watery eyes, which can be your body’s response to the irritation.
  • Discomfort when you wear contact lenses.
  • Grittiness, like a piece of sand is trapped under your eyelid.

Comfort and Treatment Timeline

What to Expect at Your Visit

It’s normal to feel a bit nervous about medical instruments near your face, but our eye care team is here to help you feel relaxed. Our office is designed to be a calming environment, so you can sit back and let us take care of you.

During your visit, the eye doctor can apply specialized numbing drops and ointment for your comfort, and many people tell us that they experience only minimal physical sensation, not pain.

Appointment Duration Details

A busy schedule often makes it hard to fit in self-care. We understand this, which is why our team works efficiently to get you back to your regular routine. The entire appointment usually takes around an hour, from asking questions and getting set up to the procedure itself.

Potential Side Effects and Recovery

What to Expect Afterward

MGP is minimally invasive, so many people find they can return to their usual routine right away. Some people report increased comfort soon after the procedure, though results vary from person to person and any benefits may continue to develop over time.

Normal Post-Treatment Reactions

MGP is a well-tolerated, safe procedure. That being said, your body may respond with a few normal reactions that should subside soon after the appointment. This could include:

  • Tiny drops of blood may appear briefly along the lash line.
  • Mild puffiness around the eyelid margins can occur for a few hours.

If you experience either of these symptoms, a cool compress can help while the reactions go away naturally. If you notice that the symptoms aren’t going away or are worsening, it’s a good idea to call our office.

When to Schedule a Visit

Preventive care helps keep your eyes healthy for the long term. For example, many eye diseases have no noticeable symptoms in their early stages, so regular eye exams can help detect changes early, giving you more options to manage care.

If you’re experiencing dry eye that doesn’t seem to get better with home care, don’t put off an appointment. There are options available to help bring you comfort and provide relief.

Our team at Higgins Brothers’ Vision Care is ready to help you find longer-lasting comfort. If you’ve been trying to manage dry eye on your own, we encourage you to book an appointment today. Let us help you take the first step toward more comfortable vision.
