How Long Does IPL Last?

If you’ve ever experienced dry, irritated eyes that just won’t seem to get better, you’re not alone. Dry eye disease is widespread and commonly diagnosed. One of its most common causes is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

This condition affects the glands in your eyelids responsible for producing the oily layer of your tears. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, your tears evaporate too quickly, leading to discomfort, redness, and blurred vision.

Typically, initial effects from IPL treatment can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months, with maintenance sessions recommended every 6 to 12 months to sustain benefits.

What Is IPL & How Does It Work?

IPL therapy uses high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light to target inflammation and stimulate function in the meibomian glands. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers a range of wavelengths. This allows the light to penetrate various depths of tissue and treat multiple causes of MGD simultaneously, including blocked glands, vascular inflammation, and skin conditions like rosacea that can worsen dry eye symptoms.

During an IPL session, a cool gel is applied to the treatment area, while a small handheld device is used to deliver flashes of light to the skin near the eyes. These flashes help break up clogged oils, reduce inflammation, and restore the natural function of the glands.

It’s a safe, non-invasive treatment that requires no incisions, no injections, and very little downtime.

What Happens During Treatment?

Each session typically lasts between 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to fit into your day, even on a lunch break. You might feel a warm, flickering sensation as the light pulses are applied, but most people find it very tolerable. Protective eyewear is used during the procedure to shield your eyes from the light.

After your session, you might notice some mild redness or warmth in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within a few hours.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

IPL isn’t a one-and-done treatment. Most patients will benefit from a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced out over two to four weeks. This gives your glands time to respond and reset, and it helps build lasting results.

Once your initial series of treatments is complete, maintenance treatments may be recommended every six to twelve months, depending on your symptoms and lifestyle. Some people find that their results last longer, while others may need more frequent touch-ups, especially if they have severe gland dysfunction or are exposed to environments that can trigger symptoms (like dry air, wind, or long hours in front of a screen).

How Long Do IPL Results Last?

The longevity of your results can vary depending on several factors:

  • Severity of MGD: If your glands are significantly compromised or have been blocked for years, you may need more regular maintenance to keep your symptoms under control.
  • Lifestyle habits: Factors like screen time, air quality, hydration, and nutrition all influence how well your eyes retain moisture and produce healthy tears. Patients who blink infrequently or spend hours staring at digital screens often experience faster tear evaporation, which can impact the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Consistency with eye care: IPL is most effective when used alongside a comprehensive dry eye care plan. That might include eyelid hygiene, warm compresses, omega-3 supplements, or prescription eye drops, depending on your provider’s recommendations.

With these considerations in mind, most patients experience several months of relief after completing their initial treatment plan. With regular maintenance, IPL can be a long-term solution to help manage chronic dry eye symptoms.

What Makes IPL So Beneficial for Dry Eye?

IPL can be a game-changer for people who’ve tried everything else and still struggle with discomfort. Here’s why:

  • It addresses the root cause: Instead of temporarily soothing symptoms, IPL works by restoring the natural function of the meibomian glands, treating the inflammation and blockages that lead to dry eye in the first place.
  • Non-invasive and low-maintenance: IPL requires no cutting, stitching, or downtime. Most people can go right back to their daily routine after treatment.
  • Improved quality of life: Many patients report feeling more comfortable reading, driving, using a computer, or wearing contact lenses after IPL treatment. For people who deal with constant eye irritation, that relief can be life-changing.

What to Expect After Treatment

After completing your IPL treatments, your eyes should feel more comfortable and hydrated. You may notice fewer symptoms like stinging, burning, or a gritty sensation. Vision may be more stable, especially during activities that usually trigger dryness, like working on a computer or spending time outdoors in dry weather.

It’s important to keep up with your optometrist’s recommendations between sessions. Simple changes like staying hydrated, taking breaks during screen use, and applying warm compresses can help you get the most out of your IPL results.

Is IPL Right for You?

IPL isn’t just for people with moderate to severe dry eye. It can also be a smart, early intervention for those experiencing mild but persistent symptoms, or for patients who want to reduce their reliance on artificial tears and other short-term solutions.

One way to find out if IPL is a good fit for you is to schedule a personalized consultation. During this visit, we’ll evaluate your tear film, assess your meibomian gland health, and discuss a tailored treatment plan based on your specific needs.
