Dr. Donald J. Higgins

Dr. HigginsDr. Higgins decided to become an eye doctor his junior year in high school and has never looked back.  In his undergraduate studies, Dr. Higgins was awarded the Trustees Prize in Science, the highest award presented to a science student.  He graduated from Boston College in 1978 and went on to attend the New England College of Optometry.  After graduating in 1982, he returned to his home town of Plainville and has been in private practice ever since.

Dr. Higgins has always been very actively involved in medical research and continued education. Recently, Dr. Higgins became one of the first optometrists in the nation to become board certified by the American Board of Optometry (ABO), passing the ABO's Board Certification Examination administered in July 2012. To attain this honor, Dr. Higgins completed an accredited residency or a series of rigorous post-graduate activities. He then passed a challenging computer based examination on issues spanning the scope of practice of optometry. This achievement earned Dr. Higgins the title of Diplomate, American Board of Optometry. Currently less than 3 percent of practicing Optometrist has achieved Diplomate status. He is a clinical diplomat in glaucoma and has lectured and taught many doctors and students about ocular pathology and treatment. Dr. Higgins has served on an advisory level for pharmaceutical companies such as Alcon, Allergan and Baush & Lomb on topics ranging from glaucoma, dry eyes treatment and a advanced contact lens procedure called orthokeratology or ortho-k. This procedure gentley reshapes the cornea, reducing the dependency on glasses.  Dr. Higgins has been a feature lecturer at many national optometric meetings and has also been asked to speak at many colleges of optometry.  He produced an educational video lecture series which has been studied by doctors around the globe and used by the United States Air Force to train their doctors.

Dr. Higgins has been a board member of the Connecticut Association of Optometry for many years and served as its president from 2007-2009.  During his presidency, he spear-headed legislation which greatly improved the quality of treatment optometrists could provide their patients.  On a national level, Dr. Higgins served in the American Optometric Association’s House of Delegates from 2003-2009.  He was part of an elite group of optometrists invited to attend the pivotal national Summit “2020.” The goal of this summit was to determine the future needs of eye care in America and how to meet those needs. The end result was a detailed plan to meet the ever growing eye care needs of our ever aging population.

Dr. Higgins is also the CAO’s liaison for a national program called “Healthy Eyes Healthy.” This is an ambitious public-private initiative to improve the visual and ocular health of Americans. HEHP promotes collaboration among government agencies, health care advocates and optometrists to develop innovative strategies for community outreach to help promote good health and optimal vision.  In 2009 Dr. Higgins was asked by the president of the AOA to serve on their medical eye care committee. This committee’s responsibility is to advise the AOA on breaking medical eye care conditions and to respond to emergency eye care needs when they arise.

Dr. Higgins has been interviewed by several news papers, journals and local television networks concerning eye and vision related topics.  He has served as an editor for peer reviewed articles for the American Optometric Association  journal and has been asked many times to review cases for the Connecticut Department of Public Health as well as several local law firms.   He is a member of several eye care groups- including the Connecticut Association of Optometry, the American Optometric Association, National Glaucoma Society, Optometric Retinal Society, Optometric Dry Eye Society and Optometric Nutracutical Society.
Dr. Higgins is especially proud to be a member of the Banzai Eye Group, an invitation-only membership that is limited nationally to 100 of the most advanced optometric practices in the country.  With some of the best minds in eye care attending these annual meeting each member leaves with the most cutting edge knowledge and technology possible.

Dr. Higgins is still very active in teaching doctors and currently mentors several young doctors and students with his wealth of medical-optometric knowledge gained throughout his active professional life.  He serves as an Adjunct Clinical Faculty for the New England College of Optometry.  “My goal every day to be the best eye doctor I possibly can be and to provide each patient with the highest level of eye care possible”.
